TIL James Murray Spangler (1848–1915), a salesman and janitor, invented the first commercially successful portable electric vacuum cleaner that revolutionized household carpet cleaning. His device was the first to use both a cloth filter bag and cleaning attachments. His invention was patented 1908.

  1. Interestingly, Spangler was an asthmatic. When he turned 60 and was suffering severely from asthma, he grew frustrated at the tiring and dusty work of sweeping the carpet in the store where he worked. He suspected that the carpet sweeper he used on the job was the source of his cough. This is what motivated him to invent a practical vacuum cleaner. As a tinkerer at heart, he set his mind to making something that would help him, and in the end it turned out to be one of the world’s most useful devices.
