TIL “Jaws” is not the name of the shark, in the movie or the book. The author (Peter Benchley) chose the title 20 min. before the book went into production, after mulling over ~125 other options. When asked “What does [Jaws] mean?” Benchley said “I don’t know, but it’s short & it fits on a jacket.”

I never knew people thought it was the name of the shark. I always just thought it was the name of the book and movie.
Spielberg called the animatronic shark “Bruce.”
Should have called it, “Oh fuck, a shark!”
And it’s the perfect title.
Simplicity in naming a product or brand is always better.
When written in all caps, the A and the W also have a cool zig zag look, like shark teeth.
That’s the public reason.
Behind closed doors, it was to stop Eon/Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Studios from making any *The Spy Who Loved Me (1977)* spinoffs starring Richard Kiel.
