TIL New Zealand was home to some of the largest birds on Earth around 600 years ago, the Moas. These ostrich-like birds were as tall as 3m but went extinct due to overhunting by the first Polynesian settlers.

I got beaten to mentioning Haask’s Eagle 🙁
After the extinction of the dinosaurs an ecological niche opened and birds took advantage of a lack of predators to grow to huge stupid sizes.
I bet they tasted great 😊
Haaat’s Eagle used to hunt Moa. Maori killed th Moa off, and with it the Haasts Eagle
Smart move. Look at the havoc emus caused the Australians.
