TIL of East Asian age reckoning. An age counting system common in China Korea Japan and Vietnam. People are considered to be one the day they are born and on New Years Day a year is added. This creates the scenario where children born on December 31 become two-year-olds the very next day.

  1. I heard this from one of my kids, her friends said the same thing. I was like ok so kids born January 1 to December 31 are 1 year old at birth. She said yup and threw in the Nye thing of turning 2, I was like ok double birthday, she goes nah one birthday for being 2…

  2. … So if one of them claims to be 18 by their reckoning, they’re actually 17 or 16 by Western reckoning? That might explain a few things.

    I have heard of this before, long ago, but shrugged it off as “just a story”.
