TIL of the 1844 Peacemaker accident, a demonstration cruise on the Potomac where a large cannon exploded. It killed seven people including the Secretary of State, Secretary of the Navy, a senior navy officer, 2 other politicians, and Armistead, the President’s slave. President Tyler was uninjured.
