TIL of the “Great Republic of Rough and Ready”, a Californian mining town that seceded from the union on April 7, 1850 largely to avoid mining taxes, but voted to rejoin less than three months later when the townsfolk realized they wouldn’t be able to celebrate Independence Day.

Well if they seceded on Independence Day that would kinda fix the problem.
Of all the reasons to rejoin, that was the most important?

Yeah right. Private tax filers in the US have to file and remit taxes **Quarterly**. I bet after about 80 days they lost their nerve and were like ‘*OK, that was fun but I don’t want to go to Federal Prison so heres my taxes’*
