TIL of the Moroccan Western Sahara wall. In 1987 the Moroccan government completed a 2700km sand wall to keep out guerilla fighters from the Polisario front, a Western Saharan independence movement. The minebelt that runs along the wall is thought to be the world’s longest continuous minefield.

Basically Morocco created the great berm to wall off the areas of Western Sahara they wanted and pretty much de facto left the rest to the rebels who call their land the Sahrawi Republic. The Moroccans took the coastal cities and left what they consider useless desert.
