TIL of the popularisation of the phrase ‘as American as apple pie’. The phrase didn’t become widely known until World War II, when it became common for soldiers to say “for mom and apple pie” when speaking to journalists about why they had enlisted.

TIL “for mom and apple pie” is how you say “fuck off” in WW2 soldier-ese.
The Canadian version is .. “As Canadian as possible, under the circumstances.”
I smell Edward Bernays’ hand in instructing soldiers to stick to the script. Considering his 1940 book concerning citizenry & 1942 study on war propaganda, this fits the timeline. The dude was a genius & an exceedingly prolific sociopath. Gotta wonder how noteworthy his coked out, incestuous uncle’s insights would have been, if not for Ed.

What could be more American than a British import?
Stupid question since they would have been drafted anyway.
Judging by the amount of cinnamon they add, methinks Americans don’t actually like the taste of apple pie that much, lol
Americans like war so much they went to war over apple pie.
