TIL Of the Shackleton expedition to reach the south pole. The ship got frozen in the ice then sank, the crew lived on the ice for months, before an 800 mile lifeboat voyage and a 26 mile mountain hike to safety. The crew were gone for so long, they were unaware of the first world war.

  1. And it’s also worth noting that the period where they were stuck produced some incredibly sharp and impressive photographs taken by an Australian photographer who was with the expedition. These are well worth looking up; some of them are just amazing.
