TIL Ohio has license plates reading “Birthplace of Aviation” and North Carolina reads “First in Flight” because the two states both claim the Wright Brothers as their own. The Wrights performed the first controlled, powered flight in Kitty Hawk, N.C. but built their plane in Ohio

Both claims are fair tho… Ohio made aviation/ planes, and NC was first take off so
Literally the only thing NC contributed was wind
They should fight for it, Hatfields and MCcoy style.
Ohioan here. North Carolina is corny for that, but it’s fun so no hard feelings
And now for my rant… because of jerks in North Carolina and the cowards at the treasury (and I presume Ohio itself), the Ohio quarter changed to “Birthplace of Aviation Pioneers.”
Which is not the saying. They arbitrarily changed a long-used motto to appease another state who had an argument that makes no sense.
And if you’re not going to use the actual thing, why would you use a thing vaguely like but absolutely not the same thing? If you can’t use the actual thing, use something else. Like: Ohio, the Heartburn of it All.
The whole thing makes a mockery of the state quarter business and it’s bullshit, dammit.
The attended school in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, and the road to the airport there is named after them.
They didn’t just build their planes in Ohio, they were raised, and owned a bicycle shop, in Dayton.
Long Island has The Cradle of Aviation Museum
