Story is a bit too vague and handwavy, wish it had more detail, but KERA (PBS) in Dallas definitely was running tons of Monty Python by the mid-1980s, including other British/Irish comedy shows like Dave Allen and Dick Emery. I’m surprised this wasn’t a thing elsewhere in the US at the time. I do remember some stations around the US were carrying the Paul Hogan Show in the 1980s, so that was something at least. The Benny Hill Show of course had a lot more success, though it was a bit more sexist with its humor.
