TIL Shigeru Miyamoto wanted to make a Popeye but Miyamoto was unable to acquire the license to use the character so he created Mario instead.

But Nintendo did make a Popeye video game, so they had the license at some point.
Killed me when I learned this!
Only other figure I liked more in the 80s than Popeye, was He-Man.
