TIL Some of the first “hard hats” were created by Native American “high scalars” working on the Hoover Dam. They would dip cloth hats in tar and wait for them to harden, protecting their skulls from injuries that could have otherwise been fatal.

Wikipedia pretty clearly says they were patented 15 years before the Hoover Dam, and obviously if you think about the last 2000 years of laborer/soldiers, you’re going to come up with a million cases of a dude putting on his ridge helmet before cutting down an olive tree…
