TIL that a drop of water spends an average of nine days in the atmosphere before falling back to Earth. If it should fall in the ocean it may take it over 3000 years before evaporating again.

3000 years is barely any longer than nine days on a geologic time scale, and that comes with an important caveat. If the water gets [subducted down into the Earth’s mantle](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Deep_water_cycle), it can take hundreds of millions of years to return to the surface.
