Log in to Reply I was reading a book where an Astronaut casually mentions that several nations around the world have sent their nationals up into space at some point. When he mentioned “Afghanistan” I had to check for myself. My first guess was that this Afghan national was actually going to be a Cosmonaut — and I was right. Abdul Ahad Momand went into space in 1988 and has been the only Afghan national to do so. Log in to Reply The Soviet Union was playing the Space Race as much as America was. One way they played was to rack up as many Communist sympathetic astronauts as possible and toss them up. They launched the [first woman](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Valentina_Tereshkova), [first Afro-Cuban](https://www.britannica.com/biography/Arnaldo-Tamayo-Mendez) and first Afghan into space.
