TIL that as far back as 1928, the USSR had a water-based analog computer that used functioned by careful manipulation of water through a room full of interconnected pipes and pumps, water levels to store numbers, and rate of flow between them represented math operations. Used until the 1970s.

  1. I remember a terry pratchet book where a character in a renaissance era fictional world designed a computer using pipes like this. I always thought it was extremely clever because I thought he made up the idea, and the logic of the system he described worked.

    That crafty old goat was just referencing this!
