  1. Worth noting that it was pretty much intact until at least the fifteenth century.

    But most of Rome was returned to fields. Where a million people had lived there were now scattered farms and a small cluster of habitation around the Vatican. I highly recommend Assassin’s Creed Brotherhood for a good impression of Rome during the Renaissance.
