TIL that freestyle swimming competitions under International Swimming Federations rules allow swimmers to use almost any technique they wish. Though the front crawl is typically used as it is the fastest technique, swimmers are not obligated to use it in freestyle events.

People ITT saying “well duh” but it’s far from obvious if your only source of info is watching swim comps. That’s how ubiquitous front crawl is.
Isn’t that why it’s called freestyle?

So could they do that underwater wiggle thing like half way or is there a limit?
The sport would be more interesting if you have to rotate through all 4 strokes, one per lap.
