TIL that Hiroshima and Nagasaki were just 2 of dozens of Japanese cities subjected to massive incendiary attacks. Firestorms leveled almost 100 square miles in Japan’s three largest cities (Tokyo, Osaka and Nagoya) alone. Hundreds of thousands were killed and millions forced to evacuate.

They started it. We finished it. If they had not surrendered it would have been far worse. Taken years to clear the mainland
WWII was a terrible terrible war.
That said, people today underestimate just how truly enraged the US was over the attack at Pearl Harbor. Unconditional surrender by the Axis powers was the only acceptable end to the war for the US population.
The only thing I can trust from history books is that the winners always are alive to tell the stories

Japan brought it on themselves by starting a war they couldn’t win and refusing to surrender when it became clear they couldn’t win. It’s unfortunate that so many had to die from bombings, but it’s literally nothing compared to the casualties both sides would have faced from a land invasion.
Also, Dresden, in Germany. Over 20,000 people killed.
The excuses that people in this thread make to justify US atrocities are hilarious.
A lot of people seem to think Japan started it with Pearl Harbor. Yall might wanna look into why Japan attacked us.
