TIL that Hiroshima and Nagasaki were just 2 of dozens of Japanese cities subjected to massive incendiary attacks. Firestorms leveled almost 100 square miles in Japan’s three largest cities (Tokyo, Osaka and Nagoya) alone. Hundreds of thousands were killed and millions forced to evacuate.

  1. WWII was a terrible terrible war.

    That said, people today underestimate just how truly enraged the US was over the attack at Pearl Harbor. Unconditional surrender by the Axis powers was the only acceptable end to the war for the US population.

  2. Japan brought it on themselves by starting a war they couldn’t win and refusing to surrender when it became clear they couldn’t win. It’s unfortunate that so many had to die from bombings, but it’s literally nothing compared to the casualties both sides would have faced from a land invasion.
