TIL That in 1762, Benjamin Franklin had a hollow walking stick created that could secretly hold ~1 pint of oil in it. When the head of the stick was pushed down, it would release oil from the bottom. He did this to trick his friends into thinking he had the power to calm waves in troubled waters.

  1. He was tricky. Used to push a cart full.of work back and forth from home to his shop. Made people think he took work home. But the cart and the contents never changed.

  2. I suspect the true purpose was to to release an oil puddle to cause angry husbands to skid into fruit carts as they chased him from the bedchambers of grateful wives.
