TIL that King Louis XV of France maintained secret diplomatic channels to further his personal interests when they were at odds with the interests of France. The group of 32 agents was called Secret du Roi and was involved in a candidacy for the Polish throne, and the American War of Independence.

  1. Not terribly surprising. Were I an 18th century world leader, you can bet I would establish agents in various places to keep an eye on things and flex when I needed to.

    Hell, were I a 21st century world leader, I’d have an entire subdivision of my government dedicated to exclusively that. That’s what the CIA is *for*.
