TIL that Legio V Macedonica was the longest-lived Roman legion. It was established in 43 BC by Octavian and existed for 680 years until it was destroyed during the Muslim conquest of Egypt in the 7th century AD

Here’s another good webpage on the history of the 5th Macedonian: http://byzantinemilitary.blogspot.com/2016/08/the-last-roman-legion-legio-v-macedonica.html?m=1
Id love to see a tv show based on Legio V macedonica where you follow the lives of soldiers in different ranks etc.
I got a question if anyone can help.
When we say a modern US military unit or roman legion is destroyed does it mean all members are killed in a battle? Or destroyed meaning its been absorbed into another unit?
If all members are killed does it mean the call sign for the unit cannot be used any longer?
I’m just curious when someone mentions an army disignation becomes history.
