It didn’t “fail”, it was a scam from the start. Candidates had to pay to advance to the next round of qualifying/training. The organizers never had any intention of going to Mars.
I remember the hype
Conversely there was a Martian organization called “Amster-damn!” that gathered investments to send Mars residents to the free wheeling fun city of Amsterdam but alas the Martian authorities were concerned that anyone going would want to stay permanently.
The Dutch wear wooden shoes to keep the woodpeckers off their heads.
Permanent human habitation on mars will never happen.
