TIL that Max Planck’s first wife died in 1909. His son died in WWI. He also had twin daughters, one died giving birth and the other twin married her sister’s husband. Two years later she died in childbirth. In 1945, his surviving son was caught in a conspiracy to assassinate Hitler and executed.

Also in 1944 (a year before his last son died), when Planck was eighty-five, an Allied bomb fell on his house and he lost everything — papers, diaries, a lifetime of accumulations.
