Damn – missed opportunity, they could have called it George…
And he pronounced his surname Eve-rest rather than Ev-er-est, which is how the mountain is pronounced.
And he was against the name, because he knew there was no way of rendering it in the local language
And his surname was pronounced “Eve-rest”, where-as westerners now call the mountain “Ever-est”.
“Thus, to settle confusion and simplify the local names, the peak was renamed to its new term.” No, the Sherpa still call it Sagarmāthā and the Tibetans Chomolungma. They don’t care what the English decided to rename it to.
Wait until you find out about colonialism.
The Tibetans should return the favor and rename England to “Eastern Ireland.”
