TIL that the 1988 film “Die Hard” starring Bruce Willis was based on the 1979 novel “Nothing Lasts Forever” by Roderick Thorp. Willis was paid a whopping $5 million dollars for his role as John McClane, making him one of the highest-paid actors at that time.

Frank Sinatra, having been in a prior movie based on the same books and having a contract to continue, had to officially decline the role so that Willis could be offered it.
He earned it. Can’t picture anyone but him for those movies.
It was this movie and Bruce Willis pay for this movie that started the trend of actors getting paid millions per movie. Before this it was unheard of and was pretty modest by today’s standards.
So is it a Christmas book?
In the book John MacLaine’s character is a grandfather and kills eleven of the terrorists, but in the end he fails to save his daughter (daughter, not wife) who falls to her death
