TIL that the last legal duel-to-the-death in the USA was fought in 1859, and it resulted in the death of A U.S. senator at the hands of a Supreme Court (of California) justice.

David Terry (the winner) was acquitted and went on to distinguish himself in the civil war before being killed by a deputy [at 66](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/David_S._Terry).
