TIL that the predecessor to the modern SD card was a storage format called MultiMediaCard, or MMC. Many SD card readers can read some MMC cards without issue. A very popular variant is eMMC, which is an embedded low-cost solid-state storage option for mobile phones and laptops.

  1. Christ I feel old that this is being treated as rediscovered ancient knowledge. Wait until you discover Compact Flash cards and, even scarier, micro hard drives delivered with a CF connector and form factor.
