TIL that the Speaker of the House is 3rd in line of succession to the Presidency, and that the Speaker does not need to be a sitting member of the House or hold any current federal/local political offices at all, although all former Speakers were incumbents in the House.

  1. Yeah. The Trumptards keep bringing this up. They have this fantasy that the GOP will take back the senate and house in 2022, make trump speaker and impeach Biden and Harris.

  2. >…does not need to be a sitting member of the House…

That desperately needs to be changed immediately. It would be far too easy for Trump supporters to make him Speaker, followed by the President and Vice President being conveniently incapacitated.

And, while we’re at it, we need to implement mandatory qualifications for holding national office, including the President. Every candidate should be required to pass an exam similar to the bar exam for lawyers, or the board exam for doctors. The idea that someone as mind-numbingly incompetent as Trump could ever be President again is an open invitation to the end of democracy.

  3. There is a rumor that the presidential succession act of 1947 was passed so that Truman’s pal Sam Rayburn a democrat (then speaker) would be 3rd in line instead of the previous 3rd in line President Pro Tempore of the Senate Arthur Vanderburg a Republican. I don’t know if this is true or not but it seems interesting if it was true.
