TIL that the vampires were not inspired by bats. Bloodsucking bats were only discovered in Latin America in the 16th century, while the earliests vampires stories were from 12th century Europe.

Interesting cuz if I remember right Dracula turns into a bat in the original book
So .. what were vampires before the 16th century?
The vampire legend started in Romania , from a very patriotic ,blody but fair head of state named Vlad Dracu or Vlad the impailer . He used to chop of the heads of enemy’s killed in battle and impail them on sticks on the boarder as a warning for other armys.
