TIL that two-thirds of the Pitcairn Island’s revenue came from stamps in the 1970s. A decrease in sales meant the islands became bankrupt in 2004.

A lot of small countries issue stamps and commemorative currency as a direct way to increase revenue for the government. Benin and Congo have issued Clint Eastwood stamps. And Somalia issued coins in the silhouette of a Ferrari and a moose.
