  1. Before Edwin Hubble was able to measure the distance to nebulae in 1920, no one could determine if a nebula was within the Milky Way or outside of it.

    That doesn’t necessarily mean that astronomers thought that the Milky Way contained everything though. They just didn’t have any way to prove otherwise.
