TIL that when Joseph Stalin’s son Yakov was captured in WW2, Stalin imprisoned Yakov’s wife as punishment and refused to trade him for a captured German officer, quipping ‘I will not trade a marshal for a lieutenant’.

After chairman Mao, Stalin had the most blood on his hands of any person. Ghengis Kahn might be up there but we don’t really have good records so who knows. If you don’t include ghengis then hitler was a very distant third place.

And then the son committed suicide by throwing himself on the barbed wire fence at the prison and being shot by the guards.
