TIL the allies had plans to assassinate Hitler in 1944, but decided against it because they considered him to be less competent than anyone who might have replaced him (likely Himmler, Bormann, Goebbels, or Goering). He made enough strategic mistakes that it was probably better to keep him around.

  1. This changes all of the terrible story/TV/movie plot lines where someone travels back to kill Hitler. The end result would be speaking German in the Americas.

  2. Yes, he repeatedly refused to allow tactical retreats in Russia to regroup. He refused to believe the ‘inferior’ Slavic Russians could possibly be winning. Not to mention rushing the war economy and going to war prematurely before the industrial capacity was fully developed
