TIL the average US driver will file a claim for a collision about once every 17.9 years. So if you got your license at age 16, the odds are quite good that you’ll experience some kind of crash by the time you’re 34. Over the typical driving lifetime you should have a total of three to four accidents

  1. It also depends on where you live. We have had problems with damage to cars that were legally parked, either on the street or in a parking lot. I don’t think that that sort of damage was counted as a traffic accident for the purposes of that article.

  2. Zero for 40 years. Hundreds of thousands of Ks on autobahns , autopistas, autostradas, the British isles and tens of thousands here in the US. I was a real dick as a kid, but when you see the autobahn, they drive like maniacs but without emotion. We’ll match 120mph for 2 hours, the. Pull into the restplatz. No ego involved. Best highway drivers in the world

  3. I’ve already had one crash and I’ve only had my license 5 years.

(Nice thing was that I was not at fault, and the insurance counted my car as totalled, and actually valued it higher than what I bought it for. Even after fixing the parts that were necessary to make it road legal (and ignroring all the paint and body work damage) I came out with about 200 bucks profit **and** a drivable car)

  4. This year, someone rear ended me at a stop sign, and someone else just rammed into me head on while I was waiting at a red light. I knew that was super unlucky, but wow. Anyone want to know which lottery numbers not to pick?

  5. *3-4 reported accidents

Lots of people work things out without getting insurance involved because it’s a pain for the person who got hit and the price of paying someone off on the side of the road is often less than the total of both the deductible and increased premiums for the person who hit them.

Not to mention hit and runs, and crashing into curbs, poles and stop signs which has happened to a ton of people I know who didn’t report them.
