TIL the catchphrase “thinking outside the box” was popularized by management consultants in the 1970s and 1980s. They used it in connection with solving the 9-dots puzzle, where lateral thinking is needed

Good post! I was once in a workshop with about 30 people and was the only one to solve that puzzle. After looking at the dots for a while, trying some things and not getting it, I said to myself, “there’s a trick to this. I’m going to have to think outside the box.” And I immediately saw the answer. I’d like to say I’m exceptional in all areas, but, nah, not really. (I do see patterns, tho.)
