    Basal Insulin: Intermediate-acting insulin

“The first breakthrough in extending the duration of action of insulin came in 1936, when Hans Christian Hagedorn and B. Norman Jensen found that the addition of protamine (a protein obtained from the semen of trout) could prolong the effects of injected insulin (35).”

This eventually became known as NPH insulin, with NPH standing for Neutral Protamine Hagedorn and named after the scientist who discovered the mechanism.
