TIL the fortune cookie is not a Chinese creation, but originated in Kyoto, Japan. It was only during WWII that the cookie became part of Chinese-American cuisine.

  1. As an Australian kid watching US TV in the 1980s I was so confused when characters routinely received the familiar and expected fortune cookies with Chinese food.

    Fortune cookies were never a thing in any of the many Chinese places I’d been to in Australia.
