TIL the Grand tack hypothesis proposes that Jupiter formed at 3.5 AU (1AU=93million miles), then migrated inward to 1.5 AU, before reversing course due to capturing Saturn in an orbital resonance, eventually halting near its current orbit.

    I saw some video not too long ago about how the planets will continue to rearrange their orbits over millions of years.

    I had always thought that things would stay pretty much as they are, but apparently that’s not true at all.

  2. It was such a simple explanation when I was younger- the solar wind blew the gas clouds off the nearer planets, ensuring that gas giants would have to be farther out in a stellar system.

    Nope.
