TIL the iconic black & white stripes on the allied D-Day airplanes were a last minute idea to help the allied naval anti-aircraft gunners more easily identity friendly planes. This was done after frequent “friendly fire” incidents during the previous invasion of Sicily

Boy, it would’ve been awkward if the Axis had also come up with the same solution
They are called invasion stripes.
They used “all the white paint in Great Britain” to do it.
