TIL The Last man sentenced to death in the UK had this guilty verdict overturned and squashed after 19 years in jail and 40 years appealing his sentence. He was 19 years of age when he was sentenced to death and 58 years of age when his conviction was overturned and his innocence recognized.

The article doesn’t explain how he was in jail for 19 years but his conviction wasn’t overturned until 40 years after he was convicted. What was happening for those other 21 years?
