TIL the main reason the Parthenon is in such disrepair is because it exploded. The monument had been in relatively good condition for millennia, however it was used as a gunpowder magazine during the 1687 siege of Athens and was destroyed after taking a direct hit from a Venetian shell

There is dispute over if it was a shell or lightning that caused it to explode
Makes me think of the only funny line from that wretched A-Team movie:
B.A. – *Why are we in a flying tank, Man?!?*
Murdock – *Because the plane exploded!!*
Honestly, this is brand new information. I saw some of the frieze at the British museum and just assumed they broke it into small pieces to fit in their Grubby little pockets.
