TIL the movie Sahara (2005) was plagued with production problems which doubled its budget from $80M to $160M, lawsuits among the crew and being accused of violations of international law. It made $119M but failed to recoup its costs and is listed among the biggest box office failures of all time

The book was so so good and the movie did not live up. The main reason Clive Cussler would not let any more of his books be made into films after this. There was also a lawsuit (which he lost) if I remember correctly.
It’s no Cutthroat Island though…
It had a great opening title sequence.
I don’t mind it. It’s kinda fun and McConaughey and Zahn are good together and have chemistry. I don’t care that Zahn is nothing like Al Giordino in the books.
Most of the Cussler novels are pretty trashy, it’s not like they’re intricately plotted thrillers. They’re pulpy airport novels, which is exactly what this film is.
Considering the other Dirk Pitt film to make it to the screen was Raise the Titanic, this at least has some pace and is fun.
I honestly had no idea this movie even existed.
I would love to see Cussler’s Oregon series made into movies. I always found that the Dirk Pitt novels involved too much suspension of disbelief.
Not only one of the biggest failures.. Potentially it ruined one of the biggest movie franchises in history. Cussler has a whole bunch of books that would adapt really well to film, and this failure stopped that dead.
I think that if done right, this could have been on parallel with the success of the Bond franchise
I liked the movie, probably wouldn’t hold up to a trilogy but most don’t. I think Hollywood is just about done redoing the 90s so I can only assume the “darker origin story” will come out soon.
My guilty pleasure movie, based on one of my favorite books, and also sticks out because I accidentally snubbed Matthew McConaughey when he was trying to promote the film.
It was shite.
It was also a piece of crap that killed the chance of having a franchise based on the Clive Cussler books. I can’t say wether this is a good or a bad thing.
