TIL The Netherlands gives Canada 20,000 tulips every year as a thank you for protecting the Dutch royal family in ww2. In gratitude for helping liberate the Netherlands during World War II in 1945, Princess Juliana presented 100,000 tulip bulbs to Canada.

Very cool tradition
And every year Canada goes: “this is very nice and all that, but what are we supposed to do with 20,000 tulips?” and “does anyone have a spare 4,000 vase’s?”…

Not just protection. We declared a hospital to be Netherland soil so the princess could be born Dutch.
