TIL the Ottawa Convention is a 1997 treaty signed by 133 countries to ban antipersonnel land mines. The U.S. never signed. The U.S. placed thousands of mines in the DMZ between the Koreas during the Cold War to help deter an overwhelming ground invasion from the North.

  1. I’m fairly certain the DMZ was before 1997. 😉

    But it’s fucked up. And it’s fucked up his many variants there are. The worst I’ve heard of are ones that spring up so they explode at chest height. Or head hight is you’re a child.

    Or the ones that trigger other nearby mines when they go off, hoping to kill other nearby people.
