TIL The terms Whig and Tory originated from partisan religious divide in Great Britain. Whigs comes from Scottish Presbyterians horse thieves, while Tory was an Irish term for a Roman Catholic outlaw. They formed due to King James II/VII, the last Catholic monarch in the UK.

That’s a pretty unhelpful article. What does the word “whig” have to do with horse thievery? Why was a Roman Catholic outlaw called a “tory”?
