TIL the US Navy was going to name a submarine the USS Corpus Christi, after the city in Texas, but Catholic politicians objected to a navy ship called the USS Body of Christ. It was instead named the USS City of Corpus Christi, a formulation which remains unique in the names of Naval ships.

They should have started smaller and named a submarine: “Corpus Alter Boys”.
They have no qualms openly supporting military force by the US, why draw the line here?
That definitely backfired. They could’ve left it as corpus christi and claimed it meant the body of christ. Now ots just a city.
As a side note, no one in the Navy includes the “City of” when referring to the boat. It’s just the Corpus Christi. Because despite what a bunch of idiotic politicians might try to do, the services really don’t care in how they apply their jargon.
And yet there was no problem with the USS San Francisco or USS Minneapolis Saint Paul. Both the same class of submarine. This country is a joke.
