TIL two German brothers Adolf and Rudolf founded two of the biggest rival shoe companies Adidas and Puma after a family feud drove them apart. This conflict divided their home town to the point that employees of the two companies strictly avoided each other and stuck to separate bars and bakeries.

In fact, the name Adidas is a shortened form of Adolf Dassler (With Adolf being shortened to Adi)
& thus begat East & West Germany
From what I was told by a Bavarian expat, it was when FC Herzogenaurach and ASV Herzogenaurach were sponsored by sponsored by Puma and Adidas respectively was when things got really ugly.
The teams are still around to this day and are rivals, but things are way less acrimonious in Herzogenaurach nowadays I’ve been told.
I also had a friend of the family who worked for Adidas and confirmed some of this.
Adolf grew a mustache and Rudolf stuck with the red nose…sorry, just couldn’t let the opportunity pass.
