TIL: US torpedoes at the beginning of WW2 had an extremely high dud rate that took awhile to be acknowledged because the US Navy refused to allow live testing of ordinance as a cost saving measure.

My favorite story is that the Union Army didn’t get repeating rifles because some quartermaster thought they’d waste too many bullets.
they used to mix rat poision with the torpedo fuel to discourage sailors from making moonshine out of it
