TIL we don’t hear that buzzing sound in speakers when our cell phones receive calls anymore because of the switch from analog GSM transmission to digital/CDMA transmission.

  1. That buzz used to be super useful. When in the car I often wouldn’t hear my phone ring over the music, but that telltale buzz would always let me know when I had a call coming in.

  2. That’s also why we have a dial tone. Without it, phone companies get nuisance calls because people think their phones aren’t working. But in reality, the dial tone no longer directly related to your call or your phone working
